The Knox County files

The world ended quickly. The stories came later.

Emergency Management File // July 1993

What happened

At first it was described as a containment incident. Roads closed. Telephone lines failed. Evacuation centres filled faster than authorities could control them.

Then the dead stopped staying dead.

Knox County became an exclusion zone and the outside world became a rumour heard through failing radios. Survivors were left with whatever they could carry, steal, repair or build.

There was no rescue coming.

Recorded transmission

“Remain indoors after sunset.”

REPORTS INDICATE A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN INFECTED MOVEMENT AFTER DARK. DO NOT ATTEMPT LONG-DISTANCE TRAVEL DURING NIGHT HOURS. SECURE DOORS AND WINDOWS. MAINTAIN A SECOND EXIT. CONSERVE FUEL. KEEP RADIO VOLUME LOW.

THIS MESSAGE WILL REPEAT.

The rules of this world

What survivors know

☀️

Daylight buys time

The infected are more manageable by day. Long supply runs and recovery missions are best planned around light.

🌑

Darkness changes them

After sunset, sprinter behaviour can turn an ordinary street into a death trap. Distance that felt safe at noon may be impossible at midnight.

🩸

Infection is real

Blood and saliva can transmit the infection. A careless fight can end a long-lived character.

📻

Information is currency

Routes, fuel, tools, safe buildings and faction intentions are worth sharing—or hiding.

🚙

Machines keep people alive

Working vehicles, generators and tools are the difference between a settlement and a graveyard.

🤝

People are the variable

Some survivors build communities. Others build leverage. Reputation travels farther than any radio signal.

Worldbuilding

Make the lore together

Character and faction backstories are designed to add to the server rather than overwrite it. Keep stories grounded in ordinary people caught inside Knox County: workers, visitors, drifters, families, volunteers, mechanics, hunters and anyone else who could plausibly have been there when everything collapsed.

Add someone to the story.
